The ICA Foundation has provided LNG IUS donations to two recipient organizations in Ghana.

Ghana Health Service

The Family Health Division (previously called the Reproductive and Child Health Unit) of the Ghana Health Service received a donation of 1000 LNG IUS from the ICA Foundation in December 2007, in efforts to expand contraceptive choice in Ghana. The donation allows for the introduction and repositioning of the intrauterine device within the available contraceptive method mix and increases contraceptive accessibility for the country’s women.

A provider training was followed by the initiation of LNG IUS distribution in eleven public- and not-for-profit-sector distribution centers. LNG IUS devices are provided to clients as a secondary product to the copper-T IUD in both rural and urban facilities of three regions. In addition to the distribution program, the Family Health Division partnered with Population Council and EngenderHealth in 2009 to evaluate client knowledge and acceptability of LNG IUS use, service-provider training, as well as the product’s affordability and accessibility. Results from this case study have assisted the ICA Foundation in understanding LNG IUS client and provider characteristics and perspectives.

Marie Stopes International

Collaboration between the ICA Foundation and Marie Stopes International in Ghana began in 2008 and 2,500 devices were provided, alongside training and educational materials, soon afterwards. These LNG IUS are incorporated into MSI’s existing contraceptive method mix in many clinics and mobile outreach clinics throughout the country.
